If I were to be a patient undergoing major surgery, I would not want a CRNA as the sole provider for anesthesia. As a matter of fact, major surgeries such as craniotomies, cardiac surgeries, transplants, etc., require the presence of a anesthesiologist. I don't believe CRNAs have the same educational background as MDAs. Therefore, their scope of practice should be limited. Of course, CRNAs don't like this idea because nurses want more autonomy when there is none warranted. They are valuable members of any healthcare team but they don't seem to realize that they lack the education and training of an MDA. Just compare board exams for MDAs and CRNAs. Maybe then you'll understand.
