Could Anesthesia be too inbred?
Think about it, the base for MDAs is MD programs, CRNAs is RN programs, with a small group of DOs thrown in. All the MD schools teach about the same stuff, same with nursing programs. The DO programs teach the same stuff as the MD programs but with a more "total patient" approach. So as far as a knowledge base, they all come from the same two "families."
Now lets add AAs. What kind of back ground do they have? Pre-med? Pre-pharmacy? Respiratory Therapy? Physiology? (Perhaps someone could list all the Bachelor programs that people finish and then go into AA. I bet it would be quite a list.)
Now you have people in anesthesia who did not all come from the same two "families." You have a variety of people with a great knowledge base on MANY different subjects. I bet the diversity of educations would do a lot to improve anesthesia as we would have many NEW ways of looking at how we practice.
Perhaps one of you guys would be the source of my greatest desire: A Dr. McCoy bed from Star Trek with monitors that turn on as soon as the patient lays down. Imagine, no stupid cables getting tangled up all the time!
