Some parts are very hard to watch (episode 2 in particular is filled with images of lynching victims and violence), and some parts made me cry (the episode on gay people's fight is a tear-jerker). But it's a pretty unflinching look at our nation's history -- high and low points. Especially fascinating if you enjoy the workings of the legal system and how laws are applied (Hupo? ).
Things I liked best? That is featured people of color (all colors, not just black), that I learned about people I've never heard of before (Pauli Murray, civil and women's rights activist, and it sounds like she had trans leanings too), events I'd never heard of before (the Chinese Massacre, which was the largest mass lynching in US history [meaning at one time, although nearly 4000 black people were lynched during slavery and especially the Jim Crow era -- absolutely abhorrent]), and the moments of humor (one guy in particular cracked me up with his plain speaking: "The writers of the constitution said, 'Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.' Now did they just mean that for white guys? Maybe. *shrugs* But that's not what they SAID."
Anyway, I highly recommend this, even if you're not American! Here's a trailer:
