I think hairbrushes are popular because a lot of people have associations with them from a young age. Even if they didn't personally get spanked with them, they read about people (usually children) who did, so it formed early kink-related associations. That's just a theory, of course.

To be honest, I feel the same way as you do, Sam. I write about them, but I personally don't have big connection to them as a spankee. As a spanker, I am happy to use one, unless the one I'm spanking tells me specifically she doesn't want to be spanked by one.

My favorite implement is a hand, both as giver and receiver. There are certain implements which can be enjoyable, of course. I have a "Throne Spanker" which is quite heavy and I have to be careful with (have posted pics of it a few times), but which gives a little thrill because you know it could do seriously hurt if you're not careful. The cane is a bit like that too -- I use it pretty lightly, but even so there's a definite after-burn which is like nothing else. So there's a little thrill about it which comes from playing with something potentially dangerous.
