The hijacker was Samuel Byck who came down from Philadelphia. He carried a homemade gasoline bomb. He shot and killed Officer Ramsburg just outside of the boarding gate. He then boarded the aircraft and shot the pilot and copilot. A flight attendant exited through an emergency exit and broke her leg when she jumped to the ground. He was shot by Butch Troyer and then shot himself. Spike Miller then heroically removed the gas bomb and carrying a safe distance from the aircraft and put it on the tarmac. Byck’s intention was to hijack the plane and fly it into the White House and kill President Richard Nixon. We recovered a tape recorder from Byck’s car on the parking lot where he explained his intentions. He said he had to open Pandora’s Box and expose Nixon’s corruption. The Secret Service took the tape and would not share a copy. A movie was made about the incident and Byck’s was portrayed by Sean Penn.
