I've been watching SS for awhile, while tempted, the complexity has been daunting. Interestingly, SS offers a "one piece" 1/1800 model at a real reasonable price. Still have to clip to free it, the detail seems acceptable even if they opened it up to 1/1200-1250. my understanding is these haven't been delivered yet, and this is the only one listed (they do have plenty of 1/1800 kits, I imagine assembly must be a nightmare;-) I ordered one just to check it out and give a review. Hi Richard.
Adjust to kits or wind up with nothing may be ultimately correct, but the current state of these detailed, exquisite 1250 kits (as represented by SS) is that they are far too fragile and difficult for many/most current collectors to build. The hobby will shrink dramatically if kit building is the only option. Perhaps professional kit builders may be part of the hobby's future.
You are certainly correct that cast metal models are slowly but surely fading away. Not only is the number of metal model producers dwindling, the problem is actually even more dire. Several producers are dependent on an even smaller number of guys who can cast their brand's masters into product. Unfortunately we currently have only a handful of metal casters.
