I only want to discuss switching at bats out in favor of plate appearances. The main reason being to make it easier on us at year end to track over use.
To Chris' point of it's not broken I would argue that it is broken when Kris Bryant is going to receive 50 less plate appearances than he should be allowed because DMB can't accurately replicate his walk rate within +/- 50%
To Anthony's point of may not be truly needed that is from the perspective of someone whose only job is to play games. Want vs need is very subjective but I sure want to implement a rule that saves a ton of time on the back end for the guys that do work for 28 teams so the others can enjoy their hobby of running their one team. The time saved can be used to send more reminders to the half a dozen or so that are always late stating that we're still waiting on their response so the rest of the league can move forward.
Lastly I want to address a comment Chris made about being penalized for trading for a player that was overused by the team they came from. I think possibly two issues have been conflated. You will never be penalized directly for receiving a player that was over used as long as you don't continue to over use that player. What Mark's buyer beware comments are about is draft picks. The AL constitution is very specific about which draft picks move down how many spots based on the total amount of usage infractions by that team. If you trade for that teams' picks at the break they may very well be worse picks than you anticipated because those picks get lowered due to usage infractions. That being said, those rule are part of what I said I was eliminating in the bottom of my newsletter. Now that the AL has points and free agency signings I will only assess a penalty on a draft pick in a case of extreme or repeated infractions and with the ability to choose the penalty rather than being pigeon holed by a hard rule I would never put the penalty on a draft pick that the team no longer has possession of so in my mind this entire topic is moot.
Please continue the discussion about plate appearances vs at bats if you have a compelling argument for against.
I'll create a separate thread to discuss the merits of the draft changes that need to be made in order to align the two leagues. I assume there will be stronger opinions one way or the other on that.
