I generally consider myself pretty open-minded and love some of the ideas I read at the bottom, such as making the draft rules equivalent (one way or another) for the two leagues.
I would be very opposed to switching from GS to IP. I'm in other leagues where this is a factor and it's an absolute bear to keep track of and factors way too much into the outcome of games. I feel as though games started is a much simpler way of doing things. Beyond that, it would require most if not all games to be head-to-head, simply because the computer can't be programmed really to take out your ace on the road that you want to limit to three innings, for example.
Further, switching to innings pitched would eliminate the "take one for the team" pitcher that's inserted sometimes in blowouts. It's essentially our version of the position player throwing to save a bullpen.
I fear that rule change would disproportionately hurt rebuilding teams.
I would again prefer to stay with at-bats although I am not as opposed in this situation. One can argue that those with higher on-bases and the ability to bunt have slight advantages, but perhaps they should?
I also think there's a certain "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" quality in those regards.
I do believe both leagues should have uniform draft rules. I'm fine with a weighted lottery or none at all.
The one rule change I'd throw out, and this was brought to my attention by another GM, is that I'd really like to see passed is the idea that a team that trades for a player can get penalized if they overused them before acquiring them. I've seen that in a couple of newsletters as a thing and it just boggles my mind. I fear that could lead to some serious angst amongst trade partners. Although I don't believe anyone in the league would actually do this since we're all friends, there's no theoretical reason for a GM not to overuse a traded player knowing they won't be the ones penalized.
Thank you for your time, for everything you do for the league and for your thoughtful letter, Jim.
