Like I said...I likely do know a few...but I don't likely know they're visa overstays... Archived Message

Whereas I know family friends, co-workers, and day laborers that have all been some form of or parents were, for lack of a better term, border jumpers. I think it also has to do with the different immigrant communities. At least in California. Mexicans and Central Americans are far more likely to be open with you about their immigration status, likely speak at least a little english and their communities intertwine with the larger community as a whole. As I mentioned, my neighborhood is something like 55% Chinese. You see each other every day. However, you very likely don't shop at the same stores and grocery markets. You might get a "hi" outta each other but language is a severe barrier. When we have block parties or street festivals, by and large, they don't participate. I assume there are "illegals" in both communities but the recent immigrant Chinese community is FAR more closed off to your average white guy than a recent immigrant Latino community. It's a level of familiarity and comfort based on anecdotal generalizations. Previous Message She eventually married one of my best friends, but there were several years where she was illegal but working. And you'd never pick her out as an illegal. Other than screwing up things like American idioms. My favorite screw up of hers was asking us to stick by her like flies on rice. Previous Message Although over half of my neighborhood is Chinese and I'm sure some of them are illegal...I'd imagine those that are fall under the visa overstay. Not sure how else you'd be "illegal" from China. Previous Message Previous Message Previous Message ***
