Hello Stephen and welcome to the forum! As far as the ringing barrels go, some of the potential reasons have been mentioned. Many times, when I handle a set that wont ring, I remove the extractor/ejector, and the screw that holds them in, and find that the barrels ring just fine. A little play in the fit-up there will cause them not to ring or maybe you'll hear a dull buzzing sound instead of a ring.
