David, I think you are telling us that the top lever is in the closed position. Take the lever and push it sideways to the right. This should move the top bolt out of the way so that the barrels will close on the receiver. When you snap the barrels on, the top lever should come back to somewhere around the middle of the receiver and then you can snap your forend on the barrels/gun. Hope this does it. Best, Mike
