    Answers in order of your questions--
    The "S' denotes a Marlin-era gun, specifically 1946-1950. Armor Steel should be stamped on the bottom of the barrels, which is the fluid steel used on Field grade guns. As to the Remington Express shells, they are safe, but awfully hard on the stock- particularly the head of the stock. I would use something lighter than Express.
    Storage? My guns are cocked and unloaded,mainly because I might forget and disassemble them, then having to go through cocking the hammers to reassemble. I also store mine muzzle down to keep oil out of the head of the stock (That statement will surely start an argument!!!)
