I think we need to make a correction to the FAQ in question. Denatured alcohol is METHANOL, not ethanol. The old terminology for Methanol is "Wood Alcohol", as it used to be distilled from the manufacture of charcoal. It is made nowadays from natural gas as a feedstock. Methanol is a commonly used thinner for shellac, and will definitely pull that type of finish off a gunstock. Steve Arnett
