I have been told by a gunsmith that the chamber length of guns made during the (roll crimp) paper shell era are just a bit shorter than they should be for plastic shells. This is because the hull length of the roll crimp paper shells are shorter than modern folded crimp plastic hulls. I have measured my 20 gauge FW and find this to be true. The smith also claims that pressure is increased as a result of these shorter chambers. He recommends slightly lengthening the chambers and opening up the forcing cones.
