That will make him gunshy for sure. Birddogs do not like to retrieve doves, especialy young dogs. The reason is the feathers on doves come out more than quail, pheasant, or partridge. Best advice about introducing a dog to a gun. allow the dog plenty of time to learn to hunt and develope bird drive. This has to be done with 100s of birds and daily contact. After the dog developes this drive to want the birds. You should start shooting birds for the dog after they learn to be steady enough for you to flush.
