To my knowledge the only factory stock carvings ever on Smith guns were to the early DeLuxe grades; intricate leaf and vine work carved into the checkered borders of the grip panels on stocks and forend. I've never seen any other factory stock carvings on any grade Smith; and what I've seen personally, or thru photos, has never included birds or animals. I suspect what you have is aftermarket; such stock carvings were a popular fad for a time during the 1950s; and this work could have been done at that time. I won't state absolutely that your stock is not factory, only that I can't imagine such factory work on an Ideal; even on special order, but a photo might provide additional insight.
