It was Hot 97 and Power 106 in LA that were credited for giving birth to the Rhythmic Top 40 format in 1986.
B96's transition into Dance coincidently with urban/dance 102.7 WBMX's demise in 1988. In 1982-1986, B96 was as mainstream as every other top 40 station, playing Toto, Styx, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Van Halen, etc. (the stuff you can still hear on WLS 94.7 nowadays) alongside Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, etc. B96 never played the former artists as 80s flashbacks as they did with the latter artists during the 90s.
