The rear view mirror tends to blur for people as time goes by. B96 had various phases when they were Rhythmic CHR from 86 - the end when they went hip hop based. In 86 they were going after WBMX and were really Urban heavy. 87 - 88 was dance pop, 89 you seen house and freestyle explode. From 90 - 91 there was a lot of Pop dance product. Then every 6 months the sound would change according to the ratings and research. It is very finely detailed in Wiki link below. B96 was *not* Hip Hop friendly all the time.
Just my opinion, Chicago had better mixes than Power 106 LA and HOT NYC, hands down. But Hot 103.5/97 was a much more better station outside of the mixes. Energy 927&5 was the best, there was no compromise, they offered what B96 didn't, dance music with no Hip Hop. That is why their audience was loyal.
You want no hip hop, then WQHT-DB Hot1035/97 Tribute stream is your go to. You like Hip Hop along with dance (research shows overall these 2 groups are water and oil), then the PartyRadio Stream is your go to.
