Merry Christmas to you, Rick, I've been reading your hyper-war series about the British Fleet during WWII, and thoroughly enjoy the articles. Ron Carlson and you deserve a lot of credit for the fine articles appearing on this site--a lot of good scholarship. As for Christmases spent in the Armed Guard, I spent Christmas of 1942 in a Signal-Quartermaster school at Norfolk, Va; in 1943 at home on leave after a tour of the Med on a Liberty ship; in 1944 on another Liberty ship in Leghorn, Italy; and in 1945 on the USS Colonial coming home from the Philippines to be discharged after a 40-day trip. The Colonial was an LSD with a bow on it, but it could cruise at 14 knots, a lot faster than the Liberty ships I had sailed on in the Armed Guard. It later beame a famous ship in the Korean and Vietnamese Wars for its participation in amphibious warfare. |
