Their Liberty Ship SS Richard Alvey was anchored at Loche Ewe. It was New Years Eve 1943, stuck on the ship and looking to have some fun somehow. He said there was a large compass on the ship that worked by floating in pure alcohol. They drained the alcohol and mixed it with any juice they could find. Replacing the alcohol with water. I am sure there was a few headaches that New Years Day 1944. But that was only the start of the trouble. A few days later they were sent on the Murmansk Run as part of convoy JW56A. When they hit the frigid North Atlantic they found out why the compass used alcohol. The water in the compass froze and busted the compass apart.
