Russ, I was also there and if you recall we came under an air attack Christmas Eve 1944.
I was aboard SS John Dickinson as a Signalman and was very slightly wounded in my forehead by a very tiny piece of own shore battery anti aircraft fire. I never made an application for the Purple Heart because I saw so many with REAL wounds in different places.
We were carrying 5,000 tons of 155mm shells and were docked at that time.
What ship were you aboard? Were you part of Convoy UGS-40 on 11 May 1944 when we were attacked by a large number of torpedo planes and bombers off North Africa???
I will look forward to your reply. Thanks very much.
I remember Christmas Day 1944 in Leghorn when two or three shipmates and I went ashore and saw some poor little kid wearing SHORTS. It was VERY cold and I wrote about it in my book. If you were in Convoy UGS-40 on 11 May 1944 your ship is mentioned in my book.
My health is SLOWLY IMPROVING and I am thankful!
Roy Brown
