So, I think Wimbledon is down to the top 16 players in each singles bracket (gentlemen and ladies). At this point, I won't even fuss over a number of sets yet, and when I look up some of the matches, they might already be "spoiled" if they're completed or in progress.
[Gentlemen Round of 16]
(1) Novak Djokovic vs (14) Kevin Anderson
Pick: Djokovic. Considering how he's been to the last two finals (maybe three of the last four?), I'd be shocked if this upset happened.
(9) Marin Cilic vs Dennis Kudla
Pick: Cilic. Dennis who? I know he's an American, but not a familiar name. Cilic won the last U. S. Open if I recall correctly, but this is a grass court surface.
(4) Stan Wawrinka vs (16) David Goffin
Pick: Wawrinka. I guess name recognition again? Wawrinka is coming off a French Open title and he played Federer tough at last year's Wimbledon.
(21) Richard Gasquet vs (26) Nick Kyrgios
Gasquet already won. I was leaning towards Kyrgios or flipping a coin. I believe Gasquet plays "serve and volley," which you rarely see anymore, and that works well on grass.
Vasek Pospisil vs (22) Viktor Troicki
Pospisil already won. I'm not sure who I would've picked, and that seems to be reflected in how they went the full five sets. I sort of know Troicki, because he was near the top 10 a few years ago and he upset Andy Roddick at the U. S. Open. Would you think the name Pospisil belongs to a Canadian? He's a newer name for me.
(23) "Doctor Ivo" Karlovic vs (3) Andy Murray
Pick: Andy Murray
I'm not sure why the Dr. Ivo name? Because of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers? I picture Karlovic as really tall and loving to "thump" the serve. Having said all that, Murray is a great returner of serve, and he was moving smoothly in the last match I watched.
(6) Tomas Berdych vs (12) Gilles Simon
Pick: Berdych. A tough one, but I know Berdych has been in a final before. I'm not as confident in Simon playing well on grass.
(20) Roberto Bautista Agut vs (2) Roger Federer
Pick: Federer. I mean, anything is possible, but I only remember one "no name" player knocking Federer out early in Wimbledon a few years back.
*******
Overall, you kind of see multiple seeds of 20 or higher (not to mention unseeded ones), which seems like they got a round farther than expected. The thing is how this is a grass court event, and I think there are barely any grass court tournaments in a whole tennis season, so the seeds might reflect overall performance on multiple surfaces.
*******
[Ladies Round of 16]
(1) Serena Williams vs [16] Venus Williams
Serena already won, and that's what I would've expected. Some people say Serena is the best ever in the women's game, since other women haven't been able to challenge her. What if she played in another era, though?
(23) Victoria Azarenka vs (30) Belinda Bencic
Pick: "Vika." Belinda who? Swiss players seem to be coming out of nowhere. Azarenka's seed looks really low. She's been as high as #2 in the world (if not #1), so I'm thinking she's coming back from an injury. Still, I think she's struggled at past Wimbledons to get deeper into the tournament.
(4) Maria Sharapova vs Zarina Dyas
Sharapova already won, and was the obvious pick. I don't think she's captured this title since she was a teenager, though.
Coco Vandewege vs (6) Lucie Safarova
Coco WON?!! I've only become aware of her from this tournament. Safarova was coming off an amazing run to the French Open final, which could explain her high seeding. She's also a lefty and never gives up on a set, from what I saw. Both of their sets today were decided on a tiebreaker.
(5) Caroline Wozniacki vs (20) Garbine Muguruza
Pick: "Caro." Wozniacki is hard to predict. She had a run at #1 in the world while Serena was injured. She's been to the U. S. Open final without winning one yet. Right now, she seems to be a top player again.
(15) Timea Bacsinszky vs Monica Niculescu
Pick: Bacsinszky. Is that last name hard to spell, or what? She's another Swiss who might have caught your attention if you followed the French Open. Does that mean she can keep it going on this surface?
Olga Govortsova vs (21) Madison Keys
Keys already won, and was going to be my pick.
(13) Agnieszka Radwanska vs (28) Jelena Jankovic
Pick: Radwanska. I'm not always sure how to spell Agnes' first name. Jankovic sounds unsual, too, but makes me wonder if that's just a Serbian way to say "Jill Johnson" .
They're both seeded too low based on their overall careers. I favor Radwanska probably because she's had better recent results at this event. Jankovic is coming off an upset of the 2014 champion, though.
*******
Similar to the men, it looks like some low seeds are breaking through for the women, too. As I mentioned, Vika, Radwanska, Jankovic ... are really top 10 players with low seeds. Azarenka, Sharapova, and Serena are all in the same half of the bracket. The bottom half looks like Wozniacki is the best seed remaining.
I'm not sure if the Americans could try to get three players into the semifinals. Coco Vandewege has another tough match up next (Sharapova). Madison Keys faces the winner of Radwanska and Jankovic.
*******
For the men, I feel like things might be a little more competitive. I want Federer to win every tournament he enters. He's a defending runner-up here, and that was his NINTH finals appearance, in something like 11 years. Djokovic is the defending champion, but he did take a loss in the 2013 final. Murray is obviously the home crowd favorite, and he's done well here in his career (2013 champion, 2012 finalist, 2012 Olympic gold medalist at this venue?).
I'll try to update when I can, but wonder what that means (daily posts from now until Sunday night???).
