The Wimbledon final, on the men's side was:
(2) Roger Federer vs (1) Novak Djokovic
My prediction was:
Federer, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
The real match went like this:
Djokovic, 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (10-12), 6-4, 6-3
Looking at my prediction, if Djokovic won the set in the real match, I had the opposite happening. The last two sets were almost on target. Somehow, I knew the first set would be really tight as well (needing a 7th win to clinch it).
I think it was after a rain delay in the third set where I started to take some notes on a sheet of scrap paper. What are the chances I could find it all these weeks later? I think, at the time of the rain delay, things could've gone either direction. After the delay, both guys were winning all four points on their serve. I think the break happened early, and Federer never got it back.
In the fourth set, I noticed from all my notes just how much disparity there was between both players. I believe Federer served five times, and in more than half of those games, Djokovic was scoring the first point, sometimes on Roger's first serve. Then, when you had Roger ahead 0-30 in a Djokovic game, the Djoker would roll off four points in a row in strange ways, like 30-30, and then winning a point on his SECOND serve (usually a weakness for many players).
I think what that result means is how Djokovic has become the best current player on all three surfaces. Technically, he didn't win the French Open, but I believe he swept the clay court matches leading up to it, and went all the way to the final, defeating Nadal (clay court MASTER in his overall career) and Andy Murray (his weakest surface, although he keeps improving). For Djokovic to now beat Federer in consecutive Wimbledon finals, when Federer is supposed to be the best grass court player of all-time, I'd say the torch has been passed.
For some weird reason, that kind of makes the rest of the season feel "boring" on the men's side. Djokovic can't go for the "calendar year Slam" in the U.S. Open, because of losing at the French. He still needs at least one French Open to win all four events (the "Career Slam"). That one was the hardest for Federer, too, but not from lack of trying (I think at least FOUR losses to Nadal in the championship match). It could be mathematically impossible for Djokovic not to finish this year as the #1 player, even if he were to lose in the end of year tournament where the top 8 players get invited.
I'm not sure if Federer has even played an event since Wimbledon. I saw a story where he pulled out of one hard court tournament. Some people suspect he's conserving energy for the 2016 Olympics (which I think requires playing Davis Cup in order to qualify), and then trying to retake the #1 overall ranking next year. Tomorrow, he turns 34 (just 8 days before I turn 35). So, it's probably hard to watch a legendary player who's almost your same age go into decline (cough, Albert Pujols, cough).
When the U.S. Open finally does start (in about three weeks?), I may cover that (possibly cross-linking to my blog?). The big story is going to be Serena, trying to defend her title and win all of the Grand Slam events in the same year. It's actually a player named Marin Cilic who's defending the trophy on the men's side. He never had to play Djokovic as I recall. Cilic upset Federer, and then played Kei Nishikori, who eliminated Djokovic in yet another upset. Djokovic at least has a chance to PLAY in all four finals during the same year. I can't remember the last man to do that. Possibly him . Rafael Nadal is finally starting to regain some confidence, too, so there could be four or more contenders for that title. Another weird thing is how I think the champion has been a different person for the last seven or eight years, although Nadal might be the only person to win multiple titles during that span. Federer hasn't been in repeat finals since he was trying to win his 6th title in a row. Djokovic was in four consecutive finals if I recall, but he posted a 1-3 record.
So, I'm sure I might break out some of those stats once the tournament starts.
