Just a reminder about the actual matchup (I'm not sure if I've been including that in every post):
(20) Garbine Muguruza vs (1) Serena Williams
My prediction was:
Serena Williams, 6-2, 6-3
I'll have to look up the actual score, which was:
Serena Williams, 6-4, 6-4
Not a bad prediction, right? Here's where I'd need to lean on my memory, or try to find a replay on the WatchESPN app.
When I tuned in, the first set was about 5-4, and I think Serena won the last game on Muguruza's serve.
The second set may have started somewhat close. Then I saw 3-1 Serena. She was up 5-1, and I think that next game was her turn to serve. If the match had ended 6-4, 6-1, then I would've been correct about the number of games won by each player. But, of course, life usually works differently than you'd expect. I know that Serena got broken, then Muguruza held, so it was only a 3-5 disadvantage. Serena could've served out the match a second time, but she got BROKEN AGAIN! Then, when you thought Muguruza might just tie up the set at 5-5, I believe the last game was pretty lopsided, where Serena got the break and Muguruza only scored one or two points.
There was even this delayed reaction to the match being over. Serena claimed she didn't hear the chair umpire say, "Game, set, and match" (on the replay, there's a pause when she makes that announcement). Then, you finally see Serena realize it must be over, because the last shot was several inches wide, and a challenge wouldn't have been able to overturn the call.
So, that was Serena's third Grand Slam title this calendar year, her fourth in a row (meaning she's holding all the top titles simultaneously), and I think this was her 21st overall? The commentators (who used to play the sport) consider her the best. I mean, I guess you can't choose your competition, but it's like Serena plays even better when she's against a top 5 opponent. Sharapova still hasn't won a match against her in at least 10 years! Granted, Serena was injured some of those years, and they probably didn't play. There just don't seem to be many players who can stop her consistently. Muguruza (opponent in this final) had just beaten her at last year's French Open if I'm not mistaken. That's a slower surface (red clay court). Then you have the journalists on ESPN.com who kind of go overboard if you ask me. We have to consider whether she's the BEST FEMALE ATHLETE, PERIOD. I'm not sure how you'd measure that, because not all women play tennis. There's an Olympic swimmer who made the team in her 40s or something like that. She may not win gold every time, but how do you measure that kind of greatness? Serena is doing all of this at age 33.
Soon, I'd like to get the men caught up. I'm not sure if I can honestly say I didn't see that potential result coming. It's just hard to watch an all-time great not even be the best player on his best surface anymore (which kind of "spoils" the result, assuming people hadn't seen or read about it by now).
