Well Lib, it's too late and it's one of those rare nights that I decided to fill a glass with a double shot of whiskey on the rocks. Not that I couldn't still cook, just too tired that's all. You waited to long. Kitchen is closed. I could do it another day, though. I guess the only point I made is that in another time, that's what people did. We're all busier nowadays, doing what, I can't tell, but I never have time to attend to details such as cooking a full meal like mom and grandma did. If we wanted wings, we just cooked them. With bagged veggies, salad, pre-wrapped baked potatoes, and microwavable rice along with chicken breasts, pork chops, and 94% lean beef patties --- I really can put a healthy dinner together faster than I could drive to any one of our three area Mickey DDDee's. Just get a foreman grill and it's a done deal. Now you may not want that kind of a dinner, and wings are laborious and messy - but still easier than driving to Edwardsville. Of course, I'm so jaded that I'll convince anyone that cooking beef wellington is easier than driving to Edwardsville to eat at any one of their establishments for any reason. Now that might not be true, but I don't mind having htat mindset. It's not like I'm free of spending money there. They got a lot of tuition dollars..nad their electronics store sold me this computer. I'm not totally free of spending outside of Granite. But going back a couple generations, the eating out thing was a luxury - even Ponderosa or Casa Gallardo or wherever we ended up. In a three job working household - if the question was what do you want -- it meant-- what will be cooked here. Now I"m not preaching at you by any means. I really am not, even though it appears that I am. IT's just that Granite will only have so many offerings. In spite of that - the best place to eat in Granite City - IMHO is at the home table. Good and wholesome food can be had for a fraction of the price of any restaurant - and quite honestly with the right ingredients - good, filling, and nutritious meals can be assembled in 15 minutes or fewer. I enjoy cooking a lot. Once I got the chicken breast down, I started experimenting with baked fish. Sometimes I put olive oil in a frying pan -- about a tsp or two and fry the fish fillet to a crisp. An overhead fan works. Now you might already do these things. I know it sounds like I'm assuming a lot - and well maybe I am. But I am just simply saying, don't underestimate what is at your fingertips or what could be had cheaply, quickly, and easily. Just because our restaurant offerings are more basic than other places doesn't mean good food can't be had in Granite City. You never even argued to the contrary. Just sayin'' so to speak.
