"IV induction is the basis of anesthesia." This concept is changing, and the whole basis of this idea was patients displeasure with the smell of ether. There are numerous studies on this issue. Remember, 99% of pediatric inductions are mask, with sevo or halothane. Take a look at this study: http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=2643976 Particularly this line: "Inhalation induction with 8% sevoflurane would appear to offer several objective advantages compared with induction with propofol in day-case patients, although a significant minority may dislike this technique." There are other studies out that also suggest this as well. Like I said, many studies are now being done that suggest the idea that IV anesthesia should be the basis of induction is rooted in: the unpleasant and horrible smell of diethyl ether, and the sudden death experiences from when chloroform was used. Lastly, diethyl ether is still the preferred method for anesthesia when no oxygen is available.. (third world countries). Take care..
