Anyone allergic/can't tolerate propofol? Archived Message

    Just out of curiosity...

Anyone out there allergic or unable to tolerate propofol? The first couple of times I was put under with propofol the only bad experience I had was the EXTREME burning (and yes, I was given lidocaine and Versed, and I remember every minute of the burning)...

The third time, the anesthetist gave my the first bump, and the tell-tale red line appeared on my arm, I told them it was so painful I wanted my arm cut off, then my face started to flush, and I started shaking a bit. They stopped the propofol, and turned the Sevo up at 8% and I then pleasantly went under.

I was told to always get mask inductions in the future because of this experience.

And when I tell other people in healthcare about what propofol does to me, and that I want to be an AA, they always laugh and say "Do you know how many thousands of doses you will be giving of that to people??"

Ahh well... I like the smell of sevo, so the mask inductions don't bother me at all. In fact, I think patients should be given the preference of either mask or IV, as long as there is no serious condition that would make a mask induction dangerous (severe GERD I guess would be one of these reasons?)
