In my practice there is no room for AA's, not due to the education but due to the lack of autonomy. I am in a rural hospital with 2 OR's, one MDA and myself. We each do our own cases, what is the point of a provider that cannot do their own case, especially as it relates to call. The AANA is not supportive (putting it mildly) for the simple fact, the AA is being used to try to bludgeon independent CRNA practice. Why else has the AA profession been so anemic for the last 30 years? Why the sudden interest in expanding them. The ASA did not give a damn about you until the last 3-4 years? There is no way CRNA's as a group can support a weapon against themselves. If AA's could be a true independent provider it would be different but you (not you personally, but as a proffesion) cannot. I have not worked with any AA's personally but if you read any of my posts you will not see anything but respect for the dedication and skills that they apply to their patients. It is the AA's master I have issue with.
