I've seen this a lot, and heard it a lot recently in the bedtime stories I listen to (the Calm app). One writer in particular keeps doing this error, and it drives me crazy. I know I shouldn't let it bother me, but it's hard to relax into sleep when this kind of bad writing jumps out at you!
Here's an example I just heard on a national entertainment channel: "Like many families, the pandemic has been hard on the Hill's." Here's another (made-up) example like the kind I hear in the Calm app: "Climbing onto the train, the seats were all taken...."
You guys see what's wrong, right? The reference is misleading! In the first example, it makes it sound like the pandemic is a family. It should be "Like FOR SO many families, the pandemic, etc."
For the second example, it makes it sound like the seats are climbing onto the train! It should be something like, "Climbing onto the train, SHE COULD SEE all the seats were taken" or something to that effect.
Does anyone know what this error is called? (Yeah, yeah, I know -- I need to get a life! )
