Kia Carens 2.0 2008 - Intermittent non start, code P0355 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2008 Engine Size and Code *: 1991 ( Optional ) ECU Type: bosch ( Optional ) Scanner Used: kts 590 ( Optional) Fault Codes: p0355
Afternoon guys. I think I am losing the plot with this one, brain has stopped so please dont berate me to hard. Intermittent non start from another garage, says would go with easy start. Fault logged with crankshaft position sensor circuit p0355. No signal from crank sensor when non starting(well this is the interesting bit looks like faint signal. 3 wire sensor but sine wave out of it(when starting and running), 1 terminal shielded earth. Now interesting part that has me confused(not difficult) Down to sensor on the other 2 wires I have 2.3volts.Ecu 2.3 out of black wire and 5volts out of red. Removed the terminal from the 2.3 one to see if it was on the wire or from ecu and it is still coming from ecu. any ideas?

2.3v or 3.3v? ECU will send a voltage down to see if it's being pulled down for diag purposes. Newer stuff is definitely 3.3v, but I can't say I've needed to test that much on these. All the ones I've changed have been intermitant failures but resistance on the sensor has always been over 1000Ω (Kia spec: 860Ω±10% @20°C). I'm assuming the code you had was P0335 (not P0355)?
I've emailed you a little more info on P0335.
Tony
Note: The EGR valve can stick open, and will NOT log a fault code!

Thanks Tony for Info, True gent. Came down to couple of problems, 1st one causing the other, kind of. edit orginal post to code P0335 Other garage had fitted new pattern sensor, car wouldn't start at all with that on it, then they refitted old one. I got it in done some testing testing but thought it still had new sensor on it as it looked pretty fresh, classic signs of failing ckp, told them would have to put genuine on. Gave us the go ahead and told me they they had put old back on. No start with pattern part on(clue here) Couple of days new sensor comes, one of lads bangs it on, No go. Back to testing. It was that voltage off 2.3/2.4 volts on the two signal wires, that threw me off initially, checked earths etc Then onto the forum, my head was melted. Worked through Tonys pdf's everything checking out fine(apart from above voltage but I chose to accept it as good)Everything checking out great.Back to signal on scope, weak. Cant be crank itself can it, put the car up in the air, doesn't look like ckp it seated correctly, dammit, bet its air gap. Removed, cleaned up face, took oil seal out, Bang stated first go!! happy days. Bit more cleaning of mating surface refit seal and it has started every time since. Here is my theory. Original sensor starting to fail, original fault, pattern and new genuine not fitting snug with rust etc hence no start with them. Morale of story, remember the basics..

did you scope it after the fix and what was the cranking and running voltage?
