Citroen C4 1.6 9HZ 2007 - No turbo boost - Unresolved #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.6 9hz
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Dec Ss modis

Hi,
I had this one in with a blown turbo, fitted recon turbo with new oil pipes, banjos and oil strainer in tank. After fitting we had over boost issues and going into limp. Removed turbo sent back to turbo solutions and they informed us turbo had lack of oil and failed again. Fitting second turbo we gave engine another flush with oil and filter and also fitted new oil pump.
Now we have under boost problem turbo pressure is 1600 mbar at full boost. Vacuum solenoid and hoses are fine, have smoked all pipes and have even replaced map and maf, you can see the turbo actuator moving to max and min.
Turbo solutions have informed me if actuator rod is moving then turbo vanes will be operating.
What next? Please advise?

How is the boost pressure controlled? Can you force full boost
by bypassing wastegate control so it runs without any control just for a test run and compare boost readings then.

Is the wastegate vacuum capsule push rod adjustable, have they altered its working length as to limit boost.

Just my thoughts really.

Lee,
I have already done that I have had it fully closed and open and makes no difference. The control is vacuum, I don't want to alter rod yet as it my void warranty!

I don't see what else you can do, if its had a new map, maf and smoke tested which seems ok then I can only think its a turbo issue.

is it possible to manually operate the wastegate diaphragm valve and see what vacuum it takes to operate it over its full working distance.

The problem is where would you find any specs to know what is correct. I had an issue with a BMW turbo where the reman company had set the push rod lenght incorrect causing issues so it is possible.

Its just strange how you've gone from over boost to under boost with just a turbo change.

Also how does overboost cause turbo oil supply failure almost instantly?

Does this have a DPF, could this affect turbo performance if its restricted.

Hi again,
it does have a dpf but all reading are low.
They said it was over boosting due to sticking vanes which stuck from lack of oil. I only have there word to go by.
I will alter the waste gate rod and post tomorrow !

How would lack of oil make the vanes stick ?

Yes the carbon in oil problem will cause bearing problems but wont cause vanes to stick or cause over boost.

how long after fitting the turbo did it fail?

Most garages wont touch a turbo issue on this engine !!

Did you fit the modified oil pipe with in line filter that has been mentioned on UKAT (sold by UKAT member)

I can see how it becomes not cost effective to repair some of these. Could quite easily be one of those jobs that never goes away and just end up costing you a fortune.

If this came to me at outset it would be exiting my premise at twice the speed it arrived, !! PSA responce is to replace engine, anything less and you will go round in circles, my advice, give up on it before the engine blows for which customer will hold you responsible and send every one of these that might cross your doors to a dealer !!

I've had problems with under-boost deviation on this engine which was down to injectors under-fueling after removal, why you should have that problem suddenly for no reason doesn't seem to compute. But as has already been said these engine are a time bomb.

hi there i see quite lot of these.ive had low turbo boots caused by the egr valve sticking open,also if its got the duel throttle body then ive had the flaps stick shut or open in the vacuum diaphram part causing boost pressure issues.theres a solenoid on the front on some and the drivers side on the others that fail,it controls wastegate opening.watch for the little plastic t piece near the oil filter,they crack and drop off vacuum to the boost solenoids.
