BMW 530d Estate 2006 - DPF Advice - Fixed #

Dear All,

My friend's 530d estate is flagging up a Particle Filter warning (reduction in power, have problem checked by BMW) on the SatNav display.

The vehicle has done 107K miles and in the service information it states that the particle filter is not due for replacement for another 27K miles time.

There are no fault codes set. We have requested the vehicle carry out a regeneration on the next drive cycle, however it's failing to regen. The car has a full tank of diesel, and when taken for a drive the engine coolant temperature is 85C and the exhaust temperature anywhere between 280 - 350C so when driven on the motorway there appears to be no reason why it won't regen.

Unless the filter is already too blocked? Looking at the exhaust pressure values at idle the reading is 38mBar and at 2500 rpm it rises to 187mBar. I suspect these figures are too high and the filter really needs replacing but would like to hear what the BMW experts feel. Customer is happy to have the DPF replaced (with a non-genuine one at £600) but would have expected a least one or two fault codes to be set.

Is there anything I'm missing or can check? As far as I know you can't do a static regen on these BMWs....well I've not found the option on the BMW GT1 tester!

I will now receive plenty of criticism but I think your best to have it remapped out and then remove DPF.

1st though make sure the CAT isn't damaged or blocked.

I use a firm in Hinckley that collects, (via courier), cleans and returns DPF's.
Have used them a few times now and got on well with them.

Hi,

Have you seen James Dillions video on youtube with a BMW DPF fault his video quotes factory pressure reading figures at 50mbar max at idle and 250mbar max at WOT. So your readings are within spec.

Can you get a soot/ash accumulation reading maybe it thinks DPF is full due to amount of failed regens? Should of got a fault code though.

Has car been re-mapped already?

Hi Sean
The system will not self regen with those pressures, remove pipe from exhaust pressure sensor, substitute your own pressure from Mityvac etc and set about 60mb, request regen and drive moderately for 15-20 mins on d/carriageway and watch exhaust temps climb to 600c.
OR, phone John Hoole at Wunoff exhausts in Bradford 01274 619070, he has an industrial oven for cleaning and does a great job.

Ok, so i am talking non-sense then i was on a DPF course last year with Frank Massey at ADS and the pressure they were telling us for fault diagnosis were quite different

They were quoting a good system being within what i quoted further up the page (100-250mbar at WOT max) and a bad one being 4-500mbar plus

So now i am confused??

500 mbar is 7 psi , you would bin a cat with that much back pressure,

1010 mbar to 14.7 psi do the math,

max back pressure at wot should be no more than 2 psi

ideal would be 1 psi

Apologies for my lateness in updating this.

We did try the method mentioned but was struggling to get it to regenerate. Unfortunately the customer was desperate to get the car fixed so had authorised us to fit a new (non-genuine) DPF.

The first one we tried was physically to big (only 10mm extra in length) and would just not fit despite the part manufacturer saying it would. A slightly more expensive one from another supplier fitted fine and vehicle is now happy again.

I'm sure if we could have had the car longer we may have been able to get the regeneration to work but having the time to take it out onto a suitably long test road (i.e. motorway) when you're located 30 mins drive from the nearest one is always going to be a problem.
