VW T5 2.5TDI PD 2008m - Induction "Thump" after MOT test #

As above,
There is a noticeable "Thump, Thump, Thump" noise coming from the air filter box in time with engine rotation. One can feel it quite well by touching the box/ductwork
(Though there is no noticeable thumping downstream of the turbo)
There is no apparent loss of power nor any fault lights on.
The noise is variable, sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes really quite load (today it was load when revved after having idled for a while but quietened down quickly)
It was fine before the MOT. (it has about 120,000 miles on it)
My instinct is for some sort of valve-train issue, (damage to hydraulic tappets perhaps) but I am wondering if anybody else has come across anything similar before?
