Landrover Freelander II 2.2 2011 - Non start issue #

Hi there,

Have this Freelander in tomorrow, it is being brought here by the AA, apparently it wouldn't start and the AA man has told customer this has a saddle type fuel tank, and that the transfer pump in one side is not working, thus it is running empty on one side and pulling air.

Does anyone know these, and does this sound plausible?

I will obviously know more when I get the vehicle here, but just trying to get the job straight in my mind before following the AA diagnosis - I haven't found their diagnosis that great in the past.

I would do my normal checks before I believe anyone's guess, the in tank set up is a little different to what he is suggesting.
The fuel delivery module is located in the RH side of the tank, and is secured to the bottom of the tank with a welded bayonet-type lock ring. The top flange of the fuel delivery module assembly provides the internal and external interface for the tank electrical and fuel connections. The flange is formed with a 6-pin external electrical connector that is connected to the 2 fuel level sensors, and the in-tank pump.

The fuel delivery module flange is sealed to the tank with an O-ring and secured with a locking ring.

The lower part of the fuel delivery module forms the fuel delivery pot, and provides the location for the in-tank pump and the 2 jet pumps. The delivery pot provides a constant reservoir of fuel for the engine drawn fuel supply. The engine fuel supply and return lines are immersed in the delivery pot.

The delivery pot is maintained full by the 2 jet pumps. The in-tank pump draws fuel from within the fuel delivery pot and forces the fuel through the 2 jet pumps. The flow of fuel through each jet pump creates a venturi effect that draws fuel from both sides of the fuel tank into the fuel delivery pot. Surplus fuel entering the fuel delivery pot overflows into the usable side of the fuel tank.

Good luck, the tank can be a b###h sometimes to drop.

Check fuel pump they got electric pump that most common on these

Adnan,
Freelander 2 , 2.2 tdci don't have an electric lift pump.
Liam, inlet flap is quite common for non start.

What I should have said is that the pump is not a lift/supply pump, but just a transfer pump. Sorry I did not read the previous posts properly. The high pressure pump has a suction pump on it. They can be a bit awkard to bleed when changing fuel filters.

Thanks for the replies.
The customer has taken the vehicle away, after i estimated time involved in dropping tank etc, she is hoping that LR will cover it under goodwill.
