VW Transporter 2.5 BNZ 2007 - Cam rattle + induction noise - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2007
Engine Size and Code *: 2500cc BNZ

Hi all !
I have a customer with a Transporter that has done 200,000 miles and is driving OK but has rattles in the cam area and an intermittent 'thumping' sound like it is firing back up the inlet.
I have not yet started taking it apart to investigate, but wondered if anyone had experience with this. I am nervous that in getting involved with replacing cams etc will put further strain on other parts and it will come back wanting an engine.

Strip down and repair or quote for engine ?

Camshaft and followers,done a few now.
I take it's a five cylinder 2.5, if so you will need the timing kit these,when I did my first one the kit was £600 plus,but you may be able to hire this now if you don't intend to specialise in
Transporters.

Nigels right.
The camshafts are prone to wear, I think they made these out of chocolate. there are so bad.
Done lots of these now,
You MUST have the special tools to do these !!

Thanks guys, I have the tools, I was more worried about the fact it has 200k on it and whether or not it would be wise.
I dont want to take a bunch of cash of the customer if I am flogging a dead horse.

I wondered if anyone had replaced camshafts on a vehicle with this kind of mileage on it

Hi Glen,
We changed cam and followers on one with 180000 miles a couple of weeks ago with success , the cam had worn through the follower.

Hi Glen,

Common job as others have said, but watch out for the cost of tooling if this is the 5 cylinder engine.
