Ford Transit 115 2.4 JXFA 2007 - Non start, excessive smoke #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.4 - JXFA
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Texa

Good afternoon,

I hope someone out there can help us with this head scratcher. The van in question was driven back from Luxembourg at 40 MPH as the EGR valve had fallen off and filled the cab full of fumes.
Came into us with a vague description of being noisy and gutless. Found the two bolts missing from the EGR valve so replaced them and now it will not start. It will start and die immediatley, chucking out plumes of unburnt diesel fumes.

We are currently just to busy to take this on so passed it on to out local diesel specialist who have done the following tests and found everything ok:

* Injectors pressure and leak off
* Diesel pump feed and operation
* Removed exhaust and checked for blockages
* Checked timing
* Checked compressions
* Scoped and tested all fuel system sensors.

Now we have it back as they cannot find a problem.
There is no fault codes, no intake blockages up to the cylinder head and if you persevere you can get it to idle for a small period of time.

Any help will really be appreciated!

Hi

Try checking oil pressure to see if is jacking the valve lifters

Hi Tom

Was the EGR replaced or was the old one just bolted back into place? If the old one fell off and was flapping around for any length of time it may be unwell.

Have you smoked the inlet and exhaust?

If the EGR was off for a considerable time has the air filter been blocked?

Could be worth taking the camcover off and checking to see if the carrier for the valve train has come loose . We have had a transit in with similar issues, smoking and rough running cutting out / hard to start, turned out the carrier had come loose and so valves not opening.
Maybe worth a look? The one we had in even had a couple of broken bolts.

I think you need to go back to what you have done. It ran before you refitted the EGR. Can you get it to it's previous state? Did you inspect the EGR? Is it sticking open resulting in poor air flow/quality?

Thanks for responses, the vehicle was running before the EGR came off, but very poorly.
Theres is no blockages or air leaks, but i like the comment reference the inlet valves not opening. Today we quickly tried easy start and no response.
The symptoms are as if there is a complete inlet blockage but we have had everything off up to the cylinder head.
I will check oil pressure tommorow and remove cam cover.
