Mitsubishi L200 Animal 2.5 4d56 2008 - Intermittent hard to start - Fixed #

( Optional) Fault Codes: Non

Hi

Truck dropped in by RAC with intermittent hard to start and misfire on start up. When this happens clouds of white smoke out of the exhaust. The truck has been with me two days and has only mucked about once briefly and not enough time to diagnose much. I have read codes and no codes are stored. I have looked at live data and nothing is jumping out at me as cause for alarm. I have now connected an amps clamp to the injectors in the hope that I can prove or disprove that the injects at least electrically are working. The thing is the ruddy thing will not play up for me now. My first thought from the symptoms was head gasket but it's not loosing coolant and the system is not pressurising at the moment. Any pointers on this one would be great help.

Thanks for the replies it done 66,000 miles Mark when it runs poor it does run like a pile of shit with a miss

but it happened so brief like this in the work shop that making any diagnosis was very difficult. I just thought if there was a known fault with these then I would try and get a head start and start looking there. I have have a scope and amps clamp on this all day to see if it would fault and sat my self on the wheel aligner all day which is next to the l200. Every time I finished an alignment I started the L200 to see if it would fault. But you guessed it, it's been spot on every time.

I had an l200 a few months ago that sometimes ran like a pile of shite and that turned out to be a loose crank shaft pulley.

Thanks Ed its worth a look. This car looks to be run on neglect so anything is possible. So far the injector wave forms all look good and I can't see anything wrong com paired to a know good one.

Right update time the customer picked the truck up yesterday. I could not find anything wrong with the bottom pulley but when scoping the crank/cam sensors and check against a known good one (My L200) I found a difference of about 5 degrees in cam phase so advised that the belt needs to be replaced urgently as it's now 4,000 miles and six months over due. I can't say for sure if this is the cause of the customers problems but I need to start at a known good starting point and a dodgy cam timing issue is bad news. I have given the customer a price for the belt and told him that if he drives the truck and the belt now snaps he only has himself to blame. Thanks for the help folks. If I get another look at this one and get a fix I will keep you posted.

Right truck back in for cam belt and found that the belt was not tight. Looks like someone has already been in there as bolts rounded and all sorts. After the new timing kit was fitted the tuck fired up and sounded altogether happier it drove better also. So now to let the customer have it back an see what happens. Will keep you posted if any further developments.

Well it's been some time now and I saw the customer out and about the other day so asked how the truck has been since they had it back. They said it has run great ever since the belt was changed so looks like the engine timing was the issue and a new belt sorted it. Would be great every now and again if the customers would came back and say thanks it's running great hayho
