Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi 2004 - Non start #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 tdci
( Optional ) ECU Type: siemens
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Ford IDS

This vehicle was recovered to us as a non start from another garage. It has had a secondhand engine but we are assured that it ran after fitting then died the next day. It has everything it needs to run present at the ECU all feeds and grounds have been load tested , cam and crank are both present,fuel pressure cranking is above 300 bar, the ecu shows no faults however there is no current draw through the injectors ? The injectors have been bench tested we have also tested resistance and continuity to ground and continuity back to the ecu . There is a pulse width signal at the injector’s ignition on off approximately 80 volts but this doesn't change when cranked .We have tried another ecu programmed to the vehicle and it’s the same . Any ideas or help appreciated.

Hi Clive,

Any codes from a global test?

Does it try to run on a small sniff?

Can we "see" the injector voltage in the data streams?
What wiring diagram are you using for the power/earth testing?

Mark, no faults from a global test , we are using IDS, wiring diagram is Bosch.IDS show an injector trigger in data logger but not sure if this is a target value ?
We are investigating the possibility of a cam \ crank sync fault at the moment but haven't got a good known scope trace . Will post up after further investigation .

Had one similar a while back, everything showed good to start. I used easy start just to confirm the engine would run and was mechanically sound, during this time I could see the fuel pressure reading fluctuating quite excessively, although during cranking it looked right, I don't think the sample rate is quick enough to display true pressure, anyway I scoped the sensor and could clearly see a problem, new frp sensor cured mine, I had the exact same symptoms as you too, worth a check

Checked our cam\ crank pattern for this engine and ours was out , car returned to the garage that brought it to us , they contacted me today and said they have rechecked the cam timing and it is correct when pinned up so i suggested something may have moved . They have decided not to carry on with the repair and are going to scrap the car. So it goes into the unresolved category. Thanks for all the replies.

Hi Clive

Is this the setup that employs a "sender" wheel or reluctor that is pressed onto the crankshaft, behind the crank pulley?

If so, could it not be the case that it is "timed up" correctly, (as in the belt is fitted correctly) but simply have the reluctor wheel fitted incorrectly?

Moreover, if there was a cam crank relationship issue, then I suspect that the engine would not crank over consistently, i.e. it would only crank for a couple of seconds max, as the PCM will abort cranking when it spots the cam crank relationship anomaly.

I didn't see any mention of short or aborted cranking.

You are aware no doubt that there are a couple of cam pulley options on this engine?

This is a 1.4 isn't it?

Dave, not sure of the set up as we didn't strip it down passed back to the garage who brought it to us ,cranking was consistent ,it may well be the case that it was incorrect components guess we will never know .Thanks for the information on the pulleys may be useful in the future. Thanks for all the replies.
