Hi Gents,
Here I was thinking I had a straight forward job! Vehicle is a non runner, scoped the sensor and I have 5v on one wire, 0v on another and the third wire I have 600mv, crank the engine no signal on any wire, give the engine a quick sniff and it runs fine. Purchased a new sensor (Intermotor) and have exactly the same results. Tried both old and new sensors by passing a magnet and a piece of metal while scoping and still no signal. Returned Intermotor sensor and tried a Lucas sensor, same results! Looking at wiring info for this engine and it seams that there are a number of different voltage values applied to them i.e. some are 12v and some are 5v. Is it possible that I have been supplied twice with the wrong sensor?? Sorry for the long post.
Mark

Bear in mind, Lucas do not make parts, they only box other peoples crap, just like inter-motor!
"In September 2004 Elta Lighting Ltd., a UK-based automotive electrical components supplier, acquired a license from TRW Automotive to use the Lucas name and logo on products in the UK and Europe. This saw the familiar green and white 'Lucas' logo return to the UK after several years absence. Now trading under the name of 'Lucas Electrical' the company concentrates on after-market component supply rather than as an original equipment supplier to manufacturers. Initially the Lucas name was used on Elta's existing product of automotive light bulbs but has been gradually expanded to cover much the same range as the original Lucas company- light units, batteries, switches and controls, ignition components, remanufactured starter motors and alternators, wiper blades and electrical accessories. Operations and manufacturing take place at several locations in the UK as well as overseas."
However, last year they were taken over by a holding company registered at the same address: Claverdon Fields Limited
Oh, and just to add, the cams are turning aren't they? Or has the camshaft snapped? Just a thought.....

OK, secret to good diagnostic procedure, take a day off, go fishing, appreciate the landscape and come back in this morning with a fresh approach! Stripped the heater duct out so I could get a closer look and double check my previous results. Pin 1 at the sensor should be the + feed of 5v and that is at 600mv (so straight away there's the problem) Checked the voltage at the ECU and it's 5v, plumbed in new cable and hay presto engine runs. Thanks to all that contributed and especially to Pete for the wiring diagram.
P.S. Fitted genuine sensor from our Ford supplier and it was £10.00 cheaper than the Lucas "branded" item Mark
