Landrover Dicovery TD5 2004 - Intermittent cutting out & "crank sensor sync lost" - Fixed #

( Optional) Fault Codes: as above

Hi All

Had this one a while

Did find a tech bulletin on this code, which involves shimming the crank sensor away from the bell housing, followed it by the book also fitted new sensor as precaution
The same fault is there, i already replaced the injector loom on this due to oil ingress at ecm plug, there is still, even after cleaning several times, small amount of oil at ecm plug, however the ckp sensor wires are not affected, im not disregarding this as a problem but i wonder if there are any L/rover techs out there who may be able to explain the reason for spacing a sensor on an engine after 8 yrs of use Is there a pending mechanical fault at the sensor area, your thoughts would be helpful

Hello Keith, can you feel any end float in crankshaft? Is there anyway of measuring the distance from the sensor mounting to the flywheel pick-up to work out what air gap you have?

Hi Keith,

Never heard of shimming the crank sensor, but they suffer with engine harness looms once oil contamination has got in. Also connectors in the Thunder ECU plugs go wide.
When you scope is load the flywheel slightly too, seen a few with shot DMF's

Oil from the past leak on the injector loom can run down the engine loom & cause oil to contaminate the crank sensor end, but you can usually see this easily.
Ref a floating crank, if they are worn that much you can push/pull the front pulley & see a lot of movement, so worth a try.
Non genuine crank sensors are rubbish, so watch out for them if used.

Think I have fixed this, i made a substitute loom for crank sensor & used the connector from a metro horn loom, routed it away from engine to avoid interference, not had it back yet!

Also made a "drip bar" at the ecm end to stop the oil returning to the multiplug, will post a pic
excuse the pic its upside down!!!
