Peugeot 307 1.6 HDi 9HY - Turbo pressure, code P0238 - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.6 hdi 9HY
( Optional ) ECU Type: BOSCH EDC16
( Optional ) Scanner Used: MACH VCI
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0238

Hi,
Got this one in with EML on. fault code P0238 turbo pressure sensor a high input.I have checked all turbo hoses and vacuum hoses. Scoped at pressure sensor, scoped duty cycle and power at boost pressure solenoid, All seem fine. When you rev at idle you can see waste gate moving, On live data under load boost pressure hits 2498 MBAR then EML will come on. Is that to high? Thought 2100MBAR to be normal under load?
What would cause over boost?

Yes too high that.
Assuming it's vacuum controlled wastegate, try flushing the solenoid with choke and carb cleaner and then a little spray of wd40 inside, it could be just sticking.
If you have bosch ecu number I can see what boost you should be getting tomorrow.
Just check if it's vacuum or pressure controlled first though and are you 100% sure it's wategate and not vairiable vane, I thought these were variable vane?

this is from a 307 1.6 2005 bosch edc16c3
at 2.950rpm turbo pressure meassured 1.446 mbar
turbo solenoid valve ocr 54%

Morning,
ecu number is EDC16C34, 0281011629.
Chris it is vacuum operated waste gate.
Will try and clean solenoid this morning.

This vehicle has a variable vane type turbo.
If you can post the chassis number I can give you some more info.

Hi dave,
The vin is VF33C9HYB84115342.
It is a vacuum controlled waste gate on turbo, could that still be variable vane?
The turbo has a whine would that give you that code?

Hi Shane, boost maps in this ecu show a max requested pressure of 2200 absolute with about 35% duty cycle any less and it's working hard to reduce pressure, and a limit of 2250, so allowing for overboost anything over 2250 for a period of time will log that fault and reduce power.

Dave said it was Variable vane which I thought too, so if the control side is working, then I would say turbo fault.

Vairiable vane will have the actuator rod that will got to the center of the turbo housing.

Wastegate the rod comes along the side of the turbo to a lever that controls a flap on the exhaust housing.

I thought the variable vane turbos had electric activators on them like the ford mondeo.
oh well you learn every day.
Would you suggest new turbo or try solenoid?

Hi again,
Thanks for all your help guys, I tested vacuum at actuator when turbo on full boost and the solenoid is shutting completely off, so it must be a turbo fault. I have been informed by turbo solutions that it is important to replace oil pump, oil pick up pipe and oil feed pipe with new turbo. Anybody no of this recall?

As you mentioned it has a whining turbo, an indication of poor lubrication or excessive boost wearing the bearings.

It's up to you and your customer how far you go and lengths to cover your arse and warranty issues.

Service history might help, has it had regular oil changes?

These engines are notorious for turbo failure, I put it down to poor servicing.
I've never replaced an oil pump, I think that's a bit over the top, but I have seen many cars with a blocked strainer, so it's a consideration.
I normally just give the engine an extended engine flush, flush and clean the turbo oil feed pipe and then use a good quality oil and filter, never been caught out so far, touching wood with fingers crossed

Others may advise differently of course.

Morning,
Got the car back in tomorrow for a turbo replacement and new pipes, on my diagnostic scanner there is a function to calibrate turbo boost. Do I need to do this ?

Hi,
I used wynns turbo cleaner and sprayed it through turbo to clean vanes and customer has informed me it's been fine.
I have told customer that if it does it again that i can strip turbo and clean properly.
