Transit Connect 1.8 2006 - Has a flat spot, codes P0087 & P0088 #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006
Engine Size and Code *: 1800 P7PA Lynx
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0087, P0088

Symptoms First: Starts first time,every time hot or cold. Will not idle for first 2 mins and idles fine thereafter, and has a flat spot between 1000 1500 rpm hot or cold.

The guy who owns it took it to the local Ford dealer, Who did various tests, replaced the fuel filter and tried a remote fuel supply.
They have reached the conclusion that the high pressure pump is at fault and have quoted £1200 plus vat to supply and fit a replacement.

I had a quick look under the bonnet and notice that the pipe from the HP pump has not been removed, [It is heavily corroded and shows no sign of being removed].

I am not sure that the diagnosis is correct, but would like a second opinion, I can`t look at it myself for a while as I am of sick at the moment, Regards, Neil.

With IDS, the test to measure/determine the pumps output, is basically, crank for 5 seconds with the IMV disconnected. So, there is no need to remove the pipe. The pressure build-up during cranking is displayed on a graph.

If the pumps high pressure generation is suspect then there are alot of tests that need to be done before replacing the pump.

Cranking the engine for five seconds while watching live data would not give me enough confidence to spend £1200 of my customers money.

check
supply quality and pressures
leak off
cranking speed
Just for starters

I would think if the vehicle starts efficiently hot/cold fuel pressure may not be your issue, but does need eliminating anyway.

It's the 'inverse' that's useful. If one sees normal pressure generated, then the pump can be deemed OK. Yes?

I agree that the pump generating a predetermined pressure in a fixed timescale would prove alot of the fuel system to be OK.

I was assuming that the 'local ford dealer' had done this test, as you said, and that this test had failed and the conclusion by the dealer was to replace the High pressure pump.

I was simply stating that I would do more testing that was carried out before I spent £1200 of my customers money.
