Nissan Pathfinder 2.5 2005 - Fuel pump fault, code P0089 - Fixed #

Does anyone know what the Nissan dealer tool does that is differant from the latest Carmen Scan software when replacing the suction control valve and you use the special function "Inj.Adj. CLear)to clear any pump adaptions ?

I expect John is asking , because the function on the carmanscan probably doesn't seem to work, the same as it doesn't on Vtech multiscan. On the X trails, Nissan state that the relearn procedure can be carried out by clearing the codes manually & describes it in their workshop information. I expect it will be the same on the Pathfinder.I managed to reset one the other day after clearing the faults manually a couple of times & you could hear the engine note change when it was done.I know when I demoed a Carman scan lite the other day it seemed to be the exact same software as the multiscan & wouldn't carry out the injector programming, although the function was there.
From memory, you need to switch ignition on , leave for 3 seconds, press the accelerator pedal to the floor & release 5 times(within five seconds), then leasve for 7 seconds, then press & hold down for 10 seconds(or until the engine management light starts to flash), this should then display any codes stored, then press & hold the pedal down again for approx 10 seconds which will clear any codes & falsh 0000 & start the relearn process.
I know that using Nissan Consult, it is just a simple press of the button/function & it is done.
There is a post on the forum with the exact instructions somewhere, but I will check them later.

Sorry - should have explained, Customer having running issues with above car, fault code P0089 when it fails and goes into reduced power but ok at all other times, no fuel restriction and new filter - suspect faulty high pressure pump issues.
Obtained a new suction control valve, fitted and cleared adaption values and re-programmed injector codes as recommended by scan tool - fault still the same, spoke to dealer who says that until they do the same with there tool it will be. The chap on the phone tried to explian that the pump has fancy electronics in it that need re-aligning to the control unit before it will re-adapt (Sorry but not that dim - it only has the sction control valve in it !). Was interested to know if anyone else has had similar and why the carmen scan does not fully do what the dealer tool does when it lists the same function.
Taking car to dealer early next week for them to do their "magic" and will see if that cures it or if we have a further problem with the pump.

I can smell it it but not see it yet, I'm sure that a pile that big I should be able to see.

What make is the pump and how many suction valves has it got?

Not sure of make but told it's the Euro 3 pump with 1 x replaceable SCV, The Euro 4 pump which has again 1 x SCV but it's not replaceable is the one that is supplied to replace the earlier ones with !

The only one I've seen with 2 x SCV'S was on a similar age X-trail but not sure if fitted on others.

Only tests i could do was to use a seperate fuel supply and return to ensure a good gravity feed to pump and easy non restrictive return. Unable to easily check leak off on injectors as there inside cam cover - rightly or wrongly I'm assuming there ok as when car starts it's ok until power is requested when it logs the P0089 fault code.

Hello John,
I am surprised you managed to program in the injectors as when I tried it on the X trail I used it on , it kept failing(using Carman scan lite). On the last one I replaced the SCV on , I managed to get it to readapt using the manual method as I previously described, although it does state that when the fault is cleared(using the consult), the relearn procedure is reset anyway.I initially just tried clearing the code, which did clear, but when I drove the vehicle it came back the same as yours & went into limp mode, but after using the manual method the vehicle drove fine without logging any faults, so it may be worth trying before you take it to the dealers.
I also didn't have any option to carry out any adaption on the Carman scan when I used it on the X trail before the onethat I last did.There was only the option in work support to be able to code the injectors, the same as on the multiscan. One other function I thought was usefull, was the cylinder balance test where you could knock out one or more injectors at a time, which could possibly have shown up an underperforming injector.You can also adjust the fuel pressure , which allows you to see how low a pressure it will continue to run at & also how much pressure the pump will create.
Below are the instruction for X trail YD22

No Tools
1. If the ignition switch stays ON after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch OFF once.
2. Wait at least 10 seconds and then turn it ON (engine stopped) again.
3. Change the diagnostic test mode from Mode II to Mode I by depressing the accelerator pedal. Refer to
EC-997, "HOW TO SWITCH DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE" .
If the battery is disconnected, the emission-related diagnostic information will be lost within 24
hours.
The following data are cleared when the ECM memory is erased.
– Diagnostic trouble codes
– Freeze frame data
– Fuel pump learning value
– Others
Actual work procedures are explained using a DTC as an example. Be careful so that not only the DTC, but all
of the data listed above, are cleared from the ECM memory during work procedures.

P1233 and /or P1234.

Well, maybe ? but you have not told us what test,s or what results !! as per Marks post.

Have you scoped the suction valve ?

If carman can,t do the re-set i would also be worried if it can read all codes correctly !

Not scoped the valve as not sure what to expect when good or faulty compared to rail pressure sensor.

Followed guided tests as per official manual which is several pages long checking for air in fuel,lack of supply, pressure sensor checks at idle and then try re-learn of pump (which i cant do) before suspecting pump issues.

Spoke to very helpful technician at delaer who also helped me with diagnosis of pump and advised we try a suction control valve and re-learn before changing pump as most of the issues they had were down to that.

What we could do with on live data is "Target fuel pressure" as the DTC descibes the fault as "Fuel pressure is too much higher than the target value", Vehicle seems to be ok at idle but unsure what pressure we should expect at other speeds / loads without testing another similar vehicle.

Had a similar one on an x-trail last year which did show this info and operating rate for the SCV and was able to record this info whilst driving to confirm the operating rate ramps up to compensate for incorrect pressure before DTC logged therfore suggesting mechanical issue with valve - fitted valve on that and re-learned and all ok.

Carried out pump learning today and allowed to idle for 1 minute as instructed in workshop manual. Road tested all ok. Many thanks everyone for your help
