Kia Sorenta 2.5 CRD 2004 - Code P1188, loosing power - Unresolved #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Size and Code *: 2.5ltr Common Rail [ Bosch ]
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Carmen
( Optional) Fault Codes: P1188

Hi

Car in garage, fault code P1188, dying down when accelerating or overtaking, pulling away at roundabout.

Fitted new relief valve on rail, fitted 4 replacement injectors, tried s/h IMV reg.

Customer getting annoyed now ,

What is the fault code description for P1188?

Your post does not indicate any tests that have been carried out? only a list of parts fitted with no explanation as to why they were fitted?

No wonder your customer is getting annoyed

Try google Kia p1188.

Seems it's a common fault, coating inside the fuel tank comes away and restricts fuel system.
Worth a look.

It shocks me when I see posts like this, dread to think what this will cost the customer.

Always check quantity and quality of fuel and supply pressure especially with a fault like this.

The customer is not the only one!

I would seriously consider passing this kind of work onto a more professional repairer & stick to discs & pads!

Actually I am not so sure that that is such a good idea!

Seriously John, you should take a step back & consider if you are trading fairly? Why on earth should anyone pay for your inadequacies?

Put yourself in their shoes. If your wife spent £500 having random repairs done to her washing machine & you found that there was a blockage in the detergent delivery pipe, you would be pretty hacked off wouldn't you!

And justifiably so!

Hello John,
I think judging by your last four posts that you are one of those garages that makes gaining customers trust so difficult for the rest of us. It sounds like you haven't really carried out much testing,instead just using the parts shotgun method, but that could be the way that you have written your post I suppose. Were you monitoring rail pressure before you decided to replace the releif valve or the IMV? did you do a spill test or measure low pressure supply?
I agree with Dave & the others & think that you should get some training or do something else, as I am fed up with customers coming in after they have done the rounds with garages like yours, who have generally ripped them off & then they don't want to spend any more on proper testing & also moan when it is something simple that we have charged them fairly for.

This post caught my interest simply because my daughter drives a 05 Sorento 2.5 for he past year and a half with no issues other than routine serviceing.

As chris says, a simple google throws up useful info on this code, includeing, among other possibilites a tsp restriced to rhd vechicles.
Just goes to show 20 mins research can go a long way with a little effort.

One of the biggest obstacles in this game is gaining the clients trust and you do this on your record and reputation.

Hi everyone, it does come across that the original friendly welcome to new and inexperienced techs has gone. I remember everyone enjoyed getting there teeth into a mystery on the site. Asking the tech the right questions helped him/her follow a logical procedure next time. It also encouraged them to go on courses to be as good as the guys who answer quieries in this site. Maybe we could have taken a sympathetic approach to john in this case. The IMV on the Kia and Hyndai was common issue.
Very difficult for anyone to turn down work if its there own business, John probably did what most guys do, took the job then tried his best found himself out of his depth & then asked for help.
Not judging, but would be nice to go back to the days when a post did not attract so much negative backlash but more guidance. Everyone has to start somnewhere.

Nicely put, perhaps we may have been a little hasty with the negative comments

I think it was just the fact that so many parts had been fitted before asking for help.

With so many CRD systems out there now I would say it's the duty of any workshop owner to make sure that at least one tech has some basic training on these systems and how to test before opening the bonnet

In general I think most members are fair and understanding of the different levels of ability and reply accordingly

I hope we have not put John off posting

Hi James & Peter.

John's response from myself may appear on the face of it to be rather harsh. However if you look back at the four previous threads that I replied too (& bumped back to the top) you will see a trend emerging that displays an unforgivable abuse of a customers trust in my opinion.

In John's Range rover post, he is advised to pay particular attention to the intercooler pipes. He then goes on to say that he has fitted a set of injectors without an improvement, only to finally fix it by replacing the intercooler.

This would not be a difficult fault to diagnose with the correct research & training. But John had the benefit of good advice from an experienced UKAT member & still screwed it up for his customer.

I may have misinterpreted John's tone when he wrote...

That just looked too jovial to me I am afraid, considering that the customer had been seriously screwed!

Can you imagine what it would be like if we all traded in the same way. OK no one is perfect & I have made my own mistakes along the way, but never have I thrown parts at a job in the way that john appears to do.

This kind of practice needs to be strongly discouraged & not brushed aside as if it isn't important.

There is nothing wrong with posting for help, but do it with professionalism & courtesy. Display your intention to do it correctly & provide evidence of tests performed & data analysed.

I am sure that no one want's to be associated with "Thick Fit Fitters"

hi all,reading above with interest why not have injectors tested rather than replaced.there is lots of free infomation on the internet and this forum on testing etc .i think i was frank massey who coined the "test and dont guess" phase and this is the way i go .i am mobile and most of the time have customer looking over my shoulder if parts fitting on car dont work he knows about it.i feel people are using forums etc for a quick fix and this is leading to poor standards of diagnostic work.

Well guys solved my problem,had 3 mechanics and always had issues diagnosing electronic faults, with fitting expensive parts that didn't solve the problem etc.Didn't see any future in diagnostic work, and the fact i was taking the problems home with me at night.so i decided to close the garage after Christmas. I wish to thank everybody who helped me over the years, much appreciated.
