Kia Sportage 2.0TD 2007 - Broken camshaft #

Year of Manufacture *: 2007
Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 TD

Hi Lads,
I had the above towed in this morning as a non started,its turning over like a sewing machine and has a cam sensor fault code.
I presumed it had snapped the timing belt but as i stripped i found more problems.
The camshaft pulley retaining bolt is broken,the cam pulley did not fall off and the key way is not damaged, so the jeep should have started.
I removed the cam sensor and as i turn the engine the cam belt and pulley are turning but the camshaft back at the sensor is not.
My question,has anyone seen this before or have any suggestions for the fault.
It only has 54k on the clock,full service history and last sertviced about 4 months ago.

Hi again,
I see alot of viewers but no replies.
I have discovered after more stripping that the cam has seized on No.1 bearing cap,i presume that the engine stayed turning which caused the center cam bolt to sheer off.
I imagine that i have lost oil pressure somewhere but not sure if it worth pursuing to find the cause of the problem or just replace the engine.
Any thoughts, anyone ?

Had the same problem with a Vauxhall Signum which had done about 23K and the owners son owned a garage that serviced it. I decided that the only garenteed repair would be replace the engine as who knows with such a good service history and low mileage where the problem lies. It could simply be a pump, it could be a blocked oil way, could be a worn engine.

Hello Dave, we had one a couple of years ago. I didn't do the job but will find out some info from the guy that did. I know we fitted a new cam, I think a bearing shell had spun & blanked off the oil way but can't be 100% sure.

Had the same happen to a freelander with the K series engine. It turned out that it was burning oil and owner continually let it run low on oil and as the cam is highest point on oil system, this was being starved and caused it to break the inlet cam, ended up fitting a second hand head as second hand engine was not available, she kept it full of oil after that.
