Citroen C5 2.2 HDi 4HX 2001 - Engine cutting out, code P1112 - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.2 hdi 4hx
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Mach vci
( Optional) Fault Codes: P1112

Hi,
Had this one in today read fault codes and had code P1112 (fuel rail pressure) looked up live data had 220bar at idle 600 to 620bar at 3000rpm and 800 bar at 5000rpm. Is this correct it seems a little high to me? any advice please?
Mass air flow reading was low and air temp high so i have replaced maf sensor.

Hi Shane,

Static high Rpm readings are not a lot of good as they do not stress the pump. (because there is very little load on the engine)

What system is the vehicle running ?

Do you have any "nominal" or "desired" readings that you can graph along with the actual value?

Hi,
I expect to see high 700 to 800 on suction and the air temp should be close to actual room temp which it wasn't . After fitting the maf a rechecked reading and I was getting 800 on suction and the air temp was 25 and the room temp was 22, before it was showing 35 and room temp was 18.
Don't think that's wasting customers money!
I will check what system it's running tomorrow. I have no desired reading so nothing to compare.

If it was booked in for cutting out, and it still cuts out , i think it is.
Fix the cutting out and then advise on the MAF.

My scanner will give me desired reading on some makes of car but not others , I thought most scanners were the same, I,m sorry Kevin if I can't afford another scanner.(Only just bought this one few months ago for £1800)
The unit of measurment is mg/i and i ment air flow not suction and the 800 mg/i is on full revs.
The customer was happy with there maf replacement as on a short test drive he said there's loads more power.
Just need to sort out cutting out now .
Customer is going to try a few things himself, like fuel filter replacment. Let you know when it,s back in and the out come.

Hi mark,
customer back now, fuel filter made no difference. I have got low pressure gauges so i will do that first.
The system is Bosch EDC 15c2.

one good tool is not everything in diagnostics.Proper training, lots of research after work, another good tools - because that one is not enough and experience.
Fuel, low pressure and injectors back leakage - I would go there first.

It was £1800 plus vat which makes it £2160.
I don,t really see what your point is?
What diagnostic machine have you got?

Lots, so on yours it would be Lexia.

I also have grave concerns about your customer changing the fuel filter. Was it a genuine canister ?did he carry out correct fitting ie cleanin all connections and blank pipes etc.

That came with the laptop as well, I think £1250 is with out.
I will check the customers work. Cant stop him from working on his own car only advise.

P.s Had an auto boss before this one(it was stolen) Did not find that any better and my mach vci. In fact the mach my be a little better.

HI mark,
Numbers off pump are cr/cp153/r70710-16s
0445010021, 010619c06701. 4c.
My low pressure gauge shows 93psi but pressure drops off when key off, Is this correct?
I have done a leak off test and injector 3 is leaking off at least 25% less then others, so i think i will have these tested first.
I have also got abs/traction dtc C1391 torque control and C1390 torque signal. any ideas? I have know info on them.

Where are you taking the pressure reading ?

It sounds very high.

you should have three readings, the first is before the filter, then after the filter and lastly on the return.

The "C" codes are remote codes,don't worry about them at present.

Hi Mark,
I took it before the filter.
I havent got a correct gauge so i rigged up something off my petrol fuel injection pressure gauge.

Hello Shane, I seem to remember a fault we had ages ago on a C5 that had a bi-metal fuel cut-off in the filter housing that would cut the fuel supply for no good reason. If your gauge is correct I agree with Mark, 93 psi (about 6 bar) is pretty high!

Gave wrong reading yesterday sorry.
pressure before filter 87 psi
pressure after filter 87 psi .
No difference.
Injectors being tested today, I'll keep you posted.

Thats twice fuel filter canister has be advised as some thing to check. Possible easy fix.

Hi all,
Had injectors back with no fault found.
Fitted new filter head but no joy.
I scoped the fuel pump today and i noticed when it cut out the amps just dropped, so i scoped the 12v supply and hi presto when it stopped no 12v supply. Can any one tell me what cuts out the fuel pump when it gets up to pressure and where is the fuel pump relay located.
Autodata is of no use.

Looking at the AD wiring diagram the fuel pump relay is inside the under-bonnet multi-function module.

But go on citreon service box and check as there could be difference,s via the RPO no.

Is it you or am I going mad?

How can you scope something if you don't know where it is?

As far as I know, nothing!!! It should run all the time the engine is running.

I think you MAY be seeing the effect and not the cause.

Hi mark,
Sorry didn't mean fuel pump relay only fuel pump, I have edited thread now.
I know it runs all the time when engine running, but it only runs for few seconds when ignition is switched on, is this timed or is there a pressure switch ?
Why would I loose my power to the fuel pump when engine cuts out and it won't return in till a few minutes then engine will start?
Kevin that's we're I thought the relay was by looking at AD but there's only fuses in there . in less the lid comes off multi function mod ?

The pump is most likely timed for safety.

Question: are you losing the feed to the pump or is the system shutting it down because it sees the engine stop?

When the vehicle is a non start what can you talk to and can't you talk to?

Morning,
Forgot to mention yesterday that I had fitted a new fuel reg to back of high pressure pump, but no difference .
On live data when driving when engine cuts out the fuel high pressure drops to 0 , if you try and start it will show max of about 20 bar . When I clear the code which is p1112 low fuel pressure it will start straight away.
Also I have scoped the fuel pressure sensor which seemed OK,
I also scoped the reg(this doesn't check reg only ecu feed) are my right in saying that?

Wire a 21watt bulb in Parallel with the low pressure pump and road test, what does the bulb do when the vehicle faults?

Hi mark,
I wired in the bulb like you said and the bulb went out just before engine cut out. After studying the wiring diagram the fuel injector lives are off the same relay as the pump, so I checked the injector feeds as well and when engine cut out no feed there . The relay is built into the multi function control unit under the bonnet. Ordered one will get it Wednesday, keep you posted fingers crossed .

Glad to hear you are pinning it down, but just a couple of things spring to mind.

What does the central electronics unit need to "SEE" for it to switch on the fuel pump?

Is it losing this signal which is causing it to switch off the pump or is it a duff unit?

I don't know is the short answer, but I always try to work through the options.

The central electronics unit has the job of controlling the fuel pump.

You said the pump runs for a couple of seconds when you first turn on the Ignition and then runs when the engine is running.(which is what it should do)

Question: how does the central electronics unit "KNOW" the engine is running?

What would happen if it lost this signal? or was "TOLD" to switch it off for some reason? (Perhaps the result of the ECU monitoring function)

I think you MAY be seeing the "effect" and not the cause.

Bosch MV diesel Injectors normally work between 70-90 volts, but you are saying that the wiring diagram shows them being supplied via the same relay?

Maybe nothing, but its just the way my brain works (or not as the case maybe)

this sounds more like a faulty injector to me .system shuts down because off fuel pressure fault. leak test injectors throttle on full then off see what you get ,hopefully you'll see the problem .

think i've been there with a citroen relay a while ago.

Mark,
Just read your post, After rechecking the wiring diagram I have made a huge mistake what i thought where injectors are solenoid valves.(same symbols).
What do you think tells relay to switch on and off?
I know it is controlled by ecu but what signals ecu?

Sit down with a coffee (and some peace & quiet) think though the fault and your diagnostic route.

Then go and monitor some live data.

Hi all,
Just update on the progress . I monitored the live data for fuel pressure against fuel pressure difference (all I have on my diagnostic machine, no desired reading). And the pressure would freeze at 900 bar when under load and then engine would cut out. So I came to the conclusion it must be a faulty pressure switch so I fitted one. This did not fix it so I decided to take it to my local main dealer as the parts bill was mounting up.
After a week received I call from the dealer telling me it was a lower pressure pump fault so I explained that I had already tested it and that I thought it was the ecu shutting off the power supply to it, so check that first, any way they fitted a new pump and as you have guessed no differences , they rang me Friday and told me it must be an injector fault which I told them I have already had tested but they seem to think the test must have missed something .
Waiting to see what there test comes up with.

Hi.
Second test of injectors and company said they were faulty.
Had all 4 reconed and it's fixed ?
This is very annoying as a had them tested at the beginning. Spoke to company and they said all they can do is refund the cost of testing. This hasn't helped customer as he has had a lot of unnecessary parts.
What would you do ?

What was the name of the company that failed to find a faulty injector?

It can be helpful to know who the bad guys are.

I guess you have to decide honestly if the parts replaced were fitted due to sound diagnostic reasons or as a best guess situation. You could always remove the new parts & refit the old stuff & keep them in "stock" as test devices (We all have them).
Your situation with the company that tested the injectors is a separate issue to the situation between you & your customer. I would make sure your customer is treated as you would expect to be treated by a supplier. You can then speak to the testing company.
Some items are difficult to get tested / reconditioned properly. I know of a company that apparently reconditions Injectors but don't supply a new coding number (when applicable) saying to use the original coding number on the injector

Hi,
It was a case of looking at live data and I also scoped various components and tested wires, but could not find a real fault. I all ways kept the customer informed I he was happy for me to fit the parts.
He is annoyed with the company not me and luckily he,s happy to keep the new parts (very understanding) .
The company is battery centre in Swansea .

With all due respect I think Steve's post has it about right.

I do understand the issue about sending parts away for testing and expecting the company to be able to test to a competent standard, however as has been said before the best test bench is the vehicle and only change a component after proving that it is at fault.
