Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 2006 - Running rough #

( Optional) Fault Codes: P0251

Hello all

I am currently trying to carry out a full pressure test on a high pressure pump. The car is running really rough, doesn't idle, smokes a lot.

I have seen somewhere on frank masseys presentation on the delphi system that when you disconnect the injectors and the imv and crank it over with the scope connected the pressure sensor reading goes to around 4v?I am getting 2.3v. The injectors are in good condition.

I am unable to find that link with the test frank was doing. Any guidance if i am doing the test right would be appreciated.

Surely this test only works if the IMV is actually mechanically functioning as it should.

If its stuck open or closed depending on how the system functinns then i don't see how it will generate fuel pressrue as this is what i thought the purpose of it was and the idea behind the false actuator kit.

I think it was on some Ford systems by unplugging the imv it reverted to full pressure so then i suppose scoping the FRP would work to test HP pump.

I had same year as yours with those running symptoms, with mine the timing chain had jumped 5 teeth, it also occaisionally threw a P0251 just to confuse matters

.The fix was a new chain/guides/tens etc

Mornin lee. Be careful giving the system full pressure like that on fords as it can do serious damage to the rest of the system, ie returns, pressure reliefs etc. I recommend find some one with a closed rail pressure test kit! If you are anywhere near Norwich I can help. If not. Good luck

This is how IDS tells you to test the pump for full
pressure and is under guided fault finding.

However it does use ECM data to draw the graph,

But i confirm it with a scope.

Hi lee,
Fuel injectors are a common cause on these engine, it will be well worth doing a basic leak off test. All so timing chains, can you scope cam, crank to check timing?

Mark,the voltage with ignition on the voltage is at .5v,how can i prove the sensor without swapping parts?i cant find any info on how to test this sensor.

Shane,i have done a leak off test and they are all ok,hardly no difference in leakoff amount.Yes i will scope cam a crank and post it,the problem i was thinking with doing that is that the cam sensor only takes a reading off the inlet cam from what i can see,so the exhaust cam could be out but the cam a crank would be ok.

Lee,
Does chain sound noisy? Has right oil been used?
Had a Renault traffic 2lt dci which had wrong oil used and all the guides on chain were worn!

I think the only real way to proof test frp sensor would be insert a suitable test gauge to the rail. I think tne only equipment that properly allows this with the engine running is bosch but I dont see what harm it can do by removing an injector pipe from the rail, disconnecting the injector electrical connector (if it will still run unplugged) and conmecting the sykes crd test kit to the rail.

Its 1700bar raited so can't see this being any different to testing direct at pump.

At leadt this way your scantool will show what its seeing compared to actual pressure.

I'm sure Mark Carter will correct this if its wromg or more importantly dangerous.

Lee is on the money, if you had a boost pressure fault code hopefully one of the first things to check would be the accuracy of the boost pressure sensor and if good working off the data outputted thereafter.

The rail pressure sensor should be no different, you have an issue with the reading so the first thing to do is prove what you are being told via the scan tool is true.

After that you can rely on the data that is being send to you via the diagnostic tool.
