Jaguar X Type 2.0D 2005 - Turbo electric actuator wiring and function info please (waveforms) #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005 Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 D (Ford TDCi Duratorq) ( Optional ) Scanner Used: IDS - Verus ( Optional) Fault Codes: P2263 - Turbo boost system performance
The car drives well, turbo boost is good and then it will drastically lose power and the Glowplug light flashes. Pull over switch off, restart and it's ok. It happens very rarely - say 100 miles until faulty.Sometimes 5 seconds of cranking is required to restart but then ok. Fault code P2263 logged as above. Smoke test intake and exhaust all good. Datalogging on IDS shows that the variable vane turbo gets stuck at 0% which results in no boost being generated. When running normally the turbo vane reading is at 100% and the electric actuator regulates down as boost condition requires. The car had new turbo/actuator (Hella) assembly 6 months and 2 owners ago. New EGR recently fitted.
This is the first electric turbo actuator I have had to deal with and could do with some advice. There are 4 wires at the actuator; Pin 1 green/orange Battery volts Pin 2 black/red Earth Pin 3 grey/red pwm 2.5v to 3.5v Pin 4 not used Pin 5 blue/red pwm 1.5v to 2.5v Pins 3 and 5 are identical mirror images. I have scoped these over 25 mile drive and pins 3 and 5 seem to go into pwm for a few minutes and then nothing for 10 minutes just constant voltage pin 3 2.6v and pin 5 at 2.5v and the car drives ok with plenty of boost.See lower trace below. The car sometimes needs longer cranking to start as shown in trace below.
Engine running below
Question - Pins 3 and 5; is one the signal from ECU and the other a feedback and if so which is which? Question - should the pwm signals be constantly present or occassional as I am seeing? If anyone has a wiring diagram/pin info that would be helpful.
Now that I have spent ages compiling this thread I think that I could possibly have a wiring or ECU fault here in that the signal from ECU to actuator is breaking down, particularly on cranking and the car has had the fault straight from starting.
Any advice would be much appreciated, apologies for long post.
Regards, Martin.
Re: Jaguar X Type 2.0D - Turbo electric actuator wiring and function info please
The Signals on Pins 3 and 5 are not PWM (pulse width modulated) signals, they are CAN data signals. The Electronic actuator is a remote CAN node that controls required boost using information transmiited on CAN from the main PCM.
Your Scope trace would suggest the integrity of the CAN wiring is fine, therefore you have either an actuator fault or a turbo fault.
I would suggest you do a bit of research on CAN Bus systems or get a training course booked with James Dillon or Frank Massey.
