Ford Transit 2.0D 2000 - Non start, low fuel pressure #

Year of Manufacture *: 200o
Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 F3FA

I've a ford transit 2.0 DI. Year 2000. Died in motion. fault code for timming came up. Didn't record fault codes. Van went to Ford who said the pump is gone. They are saying the pump isn't pumping hard enough, and suggested cleaning the pump out to solve the problem.
Anyone heard of this.

Hi Martin.

Could I suggest that you read your post again....

I don't mean to be rude Martin, but you have been posting on UKAT for a while now. Surely you must realise that the your post falls way short of what is expected.

You get back what you put in you know!

Is it too much to ask that members could at least read their posts before they commit. I know that non of us are "shakespear" in the making, but it doesn't take a minute to check your words, to make sure that they make sense.

It's not just the words though Martin. What about the actual DTC & definition? I don't know about others, but I don't know from your post, if we are discussing a DI or TDCI system. I am not about to go looking at Autodata for clarity.

What about the checks that have been performed? Is UKAT the first port of call on the diagnostic path?

If you want help, then help yourself & make the effort.

This post is not just aimed at you Martin!

I do know that i am no writter but does that mean I should just stop, give up and go away.

UKAT isn't my first port of call. I code read the van. the results of this test were that there was a timing issue. my customer took it apon himself to take the van to Ford, who diagnosed a fuel pump problem.

I have seen that other poeple come to ukat as part of there diagnostic process and it is a good idea. If you don't know it all, then it's good to pick it up from poeple who do.

I am trying to find out how to test the injector pump. I have a solus pro, but know the data shown is only as good as the ecu provides which leads to actual component testing, to check what you are getting is accurate. How do I actualy test the fuel pump and from each line.

You say the message isn't just directed at me, but it is my post you have put it to.

Yes Martin my post wasn't JUST aimed at you, but yours was a perfect example of a rushed post, created with hardly any thought about how other members are going to receive it.

The edits in your post since I highlighted it, show that you can review & edit your words, so why not take a moment before you hit "POST" in the first place & make sure it is suitable.

The writing is only part of it though. Why didn't you make a note of the DTC? This is probably the most useful clue that you could have supplied. Didn't you have a pen to hand when you scanned it?

There is nowt wrong with asking for help on a subject that you aren't sure about, but for goodness sake, it doesn't half help your case if you can be see to try your best!

You wouldn't go to your doctor & tell him half the story or leave vital parts out of your symptoms.

The only time i've seen timing errors stored in the pump ecu were due to the timing control solenoid in rear of pump but this resulted in 2 fault codes and a heavy diesel knock.

Could also be mechancial timing errors as well.

If its a front wheel drive DI,and in the absence of code numbers i would check the wiring above the starter to the pump.
It will be in the archives as a known problem.

I have gone into my scan tool and retrieved the fault codes. p0149 Fuel timing error, and B2141. When I first came to the vehicle, I knew that the van had previously had different fuel pump fitted. I was expecting to find faults stored, but knew they are probably old, and may not have any bearing on the vans current problem, and this is why I never paid much attention to them. I saved them. then cleared the codes, tried to start the vehicle several times. No fault codes came up.
It is unclear if these codes have any bearing on the current non start.

What you could try in your post for help is suppling,
Vehicle make, model and year as you do, BUT also in diesel systems the type ie Bosch, Delphi, Siemens, Denso, Zexel etc.
PLUS pump type ( mechanical or electronic) and the pump number if possible as the same looking vehicle could have the same type of pump but different emission levels and therefore different components fitted. It is important.

Hi guys. Let me start by saying that I am not asking for advise, or what to do with the job at hand.
If you are familiar with my posts then you will know that there has be some problems. I am referring to my Nissan vanette, Iveco daily, and Renault Scenic posts.
I am putting this post out to show that I have changed my approach to diagnosing faults.
Take this Transit, 2000, 2.0, D3FA with a bosch VP30 fuel pump. I posted the add originally saying no pressure from the fuel pump. This was because the van had been taken to ford by the owner and he said they told him the fuel pump isn't giving out enough pressure, and could be caused by the fact that someone had bypassed the fuel filter, so there's a direct feed straight from the tank.
I connected my scan tool to the van before it went to ford and the following soft codes were present P0149 (Fuel timing error) and B2141 (NVM Configuration)
I know that the van had not long ago had to have a new fuel pump and thought these codes may be old un erased codes after repair. I saved the codes and deleted them. Tried starting the van for a while and no codes came back up.
I posted previously about the van on what Ford were ment to have said.
Now I have Started from scratch on the van and gone at it to check all the basics, and work out from there. I did connect my scantool because it had been a month sinse I'd last seen it. The fault code B2141 was there again which I erased. I did a compresion test and the results were as follows Cylinder number 1 90psi. Cylinder no. 2 180psi. cylinder no.3 220psi and no.4 300 psi.
I then did a leak down test. Cylinder no.1 leaking past all valves and rings. Cylinder no.2 leaking just past the rings. no.3 past all the valves and the rings, and then no.4 leaking past 1 inlet valve and rings.
I did compression test again with a drop of oil in the chamber and the results did change Cylinder no.1 100psi. Cylinder no.2 360psi. no.3 275 psi and finaly number 4 310psi.
I did check the valve timing and it all locks up right appart from the fact that I had to move the pump 1/2 mm to get the pin in.
I have told the customer he needs a rebuild. Even if the fuel pump is, or isn't gone this engine is well below satisfactory.

Well this is my post, I will update with progress.

A good improvement in your diagnostic routine, well done. But i,m a little surpised by the relationship with the compressions to cylinder leakage test,s.
What percentage did the gauge show on leakage test.

I bought a twin gage sealey leakdown tester last year. On the reading gage the needle always goes all the way down. This may be that the engines I've used it on have been bad, or the gage doesn't work properly. I rely on listening for leakage, to locate the course of low compression, or pressurising the water.
I did use it before to rebuild my own 2003 2.0 front wheel duratorque 85 hp. the gage was going all the way down then, I had the engine on the floor, and after I lapped the valves in, I bolted the head on with the old head bolts, and leak down tested it, and found some of the valves were leaking, I re-did until it sounded good, I was getting slight leakage from the rings, but the compression readings were 380, 360, 380 and 360 psi,on completion. When finished I did use new head bolts. My van has been fine for a nearly a year.
On the van I'm working on now there is no leakage from the valves on cylinder 2 but a bit from rings so A top end rebuild wouldn't do.
