VW Golf 1.9 TDi 2001 - Intermittent non start - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Size and Code *: 1.9 TDI

Hi

Car intermittently wants to start when you turn it over you would almost think the starter was not engaging or there was no compression, we have fitted new starter but is still the same if you try several times it does start in end ring gear apperared ok on inspection when starter was off, wondering if this could possibly be a dual mass problem or just not really sure how to test this one either any help would be most appreciated thanks Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,
Have you done a compression test or if you have a scope, maybe a relative compression test? What amps are being drawn? Did you inspect the whole circumference of the ring gear? Do you have any method for reading RPM while cranking? Does it start easily with a push or tow? Engine code may also help you to get more ideas from members. Sorry for lots of questions but they are all things I would be asking, and maybe more, if I was doing the job.

assuming it is actually cranking, sound like the intake throttle valve is sticking closed.

no air = no compression + no start.

Come to think of it mine was the intake butterfly at fault but before noticing that that was the problem I also noticed a sticky wategate that will teach me for drinking and posting

Hi Carl
I just sat reading your first post for quite a while trying to work out how the wastegate would cause this problem

. I hadn't thought of intake flap but it makes perfect sense.

Hi Bryan
sorry about the first post bit of a blonde momement I just remembered on the one I had with the symptoms findind a sticky wastegate forgot all about that that was another fault and the problem was the intake butterfly

Sorry took a while to get back to ya fellas you were exactly right the flap was sticking removed and found to be very carboned up cleaned all throughly and reassembled starting perfect now an unusual one but easy fix thanks very much everyone for your help.
